The Virtual High School
The Virtual High School (VHS, Inc.) is an educational nonprofit that has set the standard for online and blended learning since 1996. VHS provides high quality online courses to schools and students to supplement their face-to-face offerings with over 200 unique offerings including STEM, AP®, honors, core and elective courses that prepare students for college and careers. VHS makes high quality education available to middle school and high school students regardless of location. Students benefit from small class sizes, support from a teacher trained in online education, and discussions with online classmates. It gives them the opportunity to become classmates, collaborate on projects and gain new perspectives not often found in a traditional classroom.
The Virtual High School is accredited by both Middle States Association Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS), and AdvancED. We offer a catalog of 23 Advanced Placement® courses and many VHS courses are approved for initial eligibility by NCAA.
Projects and highlights:
- VHS is proud to offer American Sign Language 1 (ASL), an introductory course that uses selected readings, visual recordings and interactive online activities to help students understand and respond to simple questions and statements in ASL. To demonstrate ability in signing skills, students will be asked to record videos of themselves signing to submit to their instructors. Students will also build their knowledge and understanding about Deaf culture and history. This course adheres to both the National Standards for Learning American Sign Language and the World Readiness Standards for Language Learning, ensuring that students develop competence to communicate effectively and interact with cultural understanding of the Deaf community. In the 2019-2020 school year, VHS will introduce ASL 2 to our course catalog.
- Since its inception in 2016, each year VHS has made a commitment to CSforAll, a movement to bring computer science to ALL students. This year, VHS has committed to develop and launch a new 15-week cybersecurity course for delivery in the 2019-2010 school year. Previous commitments include launching new online Introduction to Computer Science Principles and Java Programming courses to provide AP® Computer Science Principles preparation to more than 600 school districts, and offer online AP® Computer Science Principles for at least 10 rural school districts in the 2018-2019 academic year, and launching a computer science certificate program to encourage students across the US to become interested in computing and to better understand the career options available to them in CS and related fields.
- In an effort to provide our teachers with the best possible professional development, we have created focused learning experiences, or micro-credentials, to help our teachers hone in on and improve specific areas of their craft. The first micro-credential focuses on providing students with effective feedback. Additional micro-credentials will focus on other important areas of practice, including creating a welcoming classroom environment, increasing engagement, and effective discussion facilitation.
